Job Description: 

The Planning Engineer leads transport network optimization of telecom central office and co-location POPs.  The objective is to groom or eliminate network elements, and in some cases, includes complete office exit.  The candidate must have a strong history of working with various network transport equipment including digital cross-connect systems, SONET and DWDM multiplexers, and various legacy TDM elements.  The ideal candidate has prior capacity planning and circuit design experience working at the Level 3 division of CenturyLink (TWT, Global Crossing, Wiltel).

Job Description:

Key Responsibilities

  • Data cleansing of transport and IP network element equipment.  Reconciliation of inventory records database against Network Element logical circuits. 
  • Removal of 'stranded' cross-connects from equipment. Disconnection of 0% utilized circuits. Update of equipment and circuit inventory records.
  • Coordination of equipment ready dates when network capacity augmentation is required.
  • Development of Migration Circuit Plans, including existing and redesigned A to Z circuit paths.
  • Preparation of design updates and circuit groom cutsheets.
  • Coordinate migration planning with telco operations.
  • Resolution of Jeopardies that arise during planning process.

Required Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of Level 3/CenturyLink planning and engineering design and workflow systems.
  • Hands-on experience with the PRO equipment/facility/circuit inventory system.
  • Familiar with transport network network equipment, including digital cross-connect systems, SONET and DWDM multiplexers, patch panels, central office fiber & DSX cabling.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills. Basic mathematical, analytical and problem solving skills. Strong attention to detail and quality of work.
  • Motivated self-starter with a passion and drive to start and complete projects. Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of layer 3 routers, layer 2 data switches is a plus.
